SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 18 April 2007 – The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) has named Stu Reed, executive vice president of Motorola's Integrated Supply Chain organization, as the recipient of the 2007 Excellence in Communication Leadership (EXCEL) Award. The EXCEL Award is the organization’s highest award given to non-members and recognizes individuals who exhibit strong leadership in fostering excellence in organizational communication.
Reed joined Motorola in April 2005 with a mission to transform the company’s supply chain into a competitive advantage. Prior to that, he spent more than 20 years at the IBM Corporation, capping his career there as vice president of worldwide manufacturing for IBM’s integrated supply chain. In this role, he was responsible for all hardware and software manufacturing and engineering for the US$96.5 billion company. Reed served as a key thought leader and implementer among a team of senior executives who transformed IBM’s supply chain operations over five years.
“What really impressed the award committee was the all-round strength of Stu Reed as a credible communication leader, and his commitment to straight talking, said Meryl David, ABC, chair of the 2007 EXCEL Award committee. “Reed seems to live and breathe communications and personally gets behind his team’s well-planned communications program that covers all stakeholders and is thoroughly evaluated. His communications have a diverse, global reach that includes China and India and we are looking forward to hearing at the International Conference about the challenges of communicating with people from very different cultures.
“In addition to process and systems, communications is a critical component to any successful results-driven business strategy, said Reed. “As we unified the company’s disparate 20,000 supply chain employees across the globe into a single ‘One Motorola’ Integrated Supply Chain organization, it was imperative to constantly communicate in a simple and consistent manner to ensure clarity of both our vision and journey to become a best-in-class supply chain operation.
Reed earned a master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in materials and logistics management from Michigan State University.
Reed is scheduled to accept the award on Monday, 25 June, at IABC’s 2007 International Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. The conference will be attended by 1,400 communicators from more than 40 countries. For more details on the IABC International Conference, visit www.iabc.com/ic .
